وعندي الدهرُ حربُ

indeed, fleet steeds stumble.

For the forerunners trample me

وكلُّ نارٍ إذا لم

وكلُّ نارٍ إذا لم

تصادفِ الريحَ تخبو

تصادفِ الريحَ تخبو

And every fire, unless

And any fire that does not

it meets the wind, dies down.

Meet the wind will die out

وكلُّ عضبٍ إذا لم

وكلُّ عضبٍ إذا لم

يقع على اللينِ ينبو

يقع على اللينِ ينبو

And every sharp sword, unless

Any wood that does not

it strikes something soft, glances off.

Hit the soft will not spark

وكلُّ سهلٍ إذا لم

وكلُّ سهلٍ إذا لم

يوفقِ اللهُ صعبُ

يوفقِ اللهُ صعبُ

And every easy thing, unless

Any plain that God does not

God grants success, is hard.

Guide becomes rugged

هذا شراعي ولكن

هذا شراعي ولكن

من لي بريحٍ تهبُ

من لي بريحٍ تهبُ

This is my sail, and yet

This is my sail but who

who will bring me a wind that blows?

Will send me a wind to blow
