أمor طولُa long span دهرٍof an age كماas نوىseparation وبعادُand estrangement
Do you think your days in the protected grounds will return,
or an age pass, as now, in separation and estrangement?

She departed, and my heart did not linger, as though
my heart and she had an appointed meeting.

After her departure, my eyes learned how to weep,
and sleeplessness came to know my eyes.

I envied her slanderer when she listened to him,
and learned how the envious suffer.

God, what tears, since her departure,
flow, and what anguish is drawn along!

We nearly went mad when her family made ready,
and I went mad when they bade farewell—or nearly did.

Had they bridled the she-camels, spared would have been
an eye, and a heart would have bidden its two flanks farewell.

But through our midst sped, bearing separation,
a lightning-flash, thundering as it passed.

It snatches away souls and bodies, if
souls and bodies come into its path.

It scatters the whole gathering; when it strikes,
it gives lovers no time to call to one another.

Its innards blaze—not from anguish,
but hearts have flared into flame within it.

Like a palace, with a chamber for each young beauty,
and for each lovesick lover a bed and pillow.

And when the oryx-maidens shine forth from it,
it is a celestial sphere, ringed about by watchers.

Its chambers seem the towers of heaven,
with a blazing star in every tower.

Had it borne no sign of separation,
it would not have the raven's blackness.

O Saʿd, this is our age: leave the she-cam—
—els to be worn thin by journeys to Tihamah and Najd.

And forsake the tale of al-Raqmatayn and its people;
al-Raqmatayn's nights have perished, and so have they.

And remember our loved ones who departed;
had they pitied our hearts, they would have returned.

Indeed, I saw their glances unsheathed
the day those necks drew their swords.

Those are the swords; in love, there is no equality
between what gazelles bear and what lions bear.

the winged one upon the boughs,

so she wept in grief and repeated her lament,
and the branches swayed for her in anguish?

Or will they remember my love if it is said, 'Ended is
the sick man's allotted life,' and the visitors have dwindled?

They withheld, and I gave freely, as though love were born
clad in mourning for the cruelty of separation.

And ask it: is there any return to it for them,
and any return for that bygone time?

Perhaps it will answer you that I keep for it
the pledge of affection—and palaces, too, have affection.

And perhaps it will echo her sigh, for
lifeless matter can echo a voice, though lifeless it remains.
