The ignorant walked in mud, yet
their palms were upon hard stone,
كماjust as يمشيwalks الجبانُthe coward وعنand beside يديهِhis two hands
صفوفُranks الحارسينَthe guards منof الجنودِthe soldiers
just as the coward walks, flanked on either side by
ranks of soldiers standing guard.
وكمand how many منamong العالمينَthe learned أخاa possessor of ذكاءintelligence
يجرُّdrags بهِhim along الذكاءُintelligence إلىinto الجحودِdenial
And how many a learned man, gifted with intelligence,
is dragged by that intelligence into denial!
أرىI see للعقلِfor the mind حداًa limit فيin التساميascending
كمرمىlike the range of الباصراتِseeing eyes إلىto حدودِlimits
I see a limit to the mind's ascent,
just as the reach of eyes has limits.
وإنَّand indeed السيفَthe sword إنif لمdoes not يلفfind غمداًa sheath
كساهُclothes it منof الصداrust شبهُa likeness of الغمودِsheaths
And indeed, if the sword finds no sheath,
rust clothes it in the likeness of a sheath.
وكلُّand all تطرفِextremism العلماءِthe scholars جهلٌignorance
وبعضُand some الجهلِignorance بالعلماءِto the scholars يوديbrings ruin
And all extremism among scholars is ignorance,
and some ignorance brings scholars to ruin.
إذاif انحرفَveered off course القطارُthe train براكبيهِwith its passengers
فقدthen indeed وجدواthey have found المحطةَthe station فيin اللحودِthe graves
If the train derails with its passengers,
then they have found their station in the graves.
وسيانَand alike البصيرُthe sighted man وكلُّand every أعمىblind man
إذاwhen نظرَاthey both gaze إلىat شيءٍsomething بعيدِfar away
And the sighted man and every blind man are alike
when they both gaze at something far away.
