Would that lovers had never loved!

Nay, would that they had never been created in the first place!

Indeed, I found life easy to swallow,

Like water—but passion makes one choke on it.

And if one finds a lover still alive,

A slain man does not survive, though life still flickers in him.

And how can a branch survive when

Fire has caught its root, and it is burning?

O moon whose rising is in the heart,

And whose dusk comes from the heart's dark core!

If you find anyone but yourself in my heart,

The horizon shows you nothing but stars.

    هواكَ عندي لصبحها فلقُ

    And there was a time like a night grown pitch-dark;

To me, loving you was the breaking of its dawn.

And you are my rose, so it does not mar you that

The leaves sprout before you, O rose.

God made you grow, bearing passion as fruit,

And these ribs of mine are its platter.

O my Lord, hearts have indeed grown too weak

To withstand two temptations: cheeks and eyes.
