Hopes sway the heavenly spheres as they sway me,

So darkness falls—or are these black depths terrors?

    لها الغربُ والإظلامُ سجنٌ وأغلالُ

    He seized the sun’s throne by force and drove her back;

The west and darkness are her prison and shackles.

He charged at this daylight, which did not stand its ground,

And headlong flight was loosed from the ostrich’s leg.

He cleft a path for it in the horizon, and it slipped away in flight,

As limpid water flows through the beds of streams.

Darkness melted for fear the sun might give a start

That would light her way after her fortunes had turned black.

He bolts the gates of heaven, with only

These stars as locks upon them.

And had it a sorrowing heart, she would be deemed

A sovereign by a statue in the temple of beauty.

And I have imagined this universe as nothing but a cheek,

On which darkness, as I picture it, is a beauty mark.

O sun, did you tear your robe when

Disaster struck you—and are these clouds on the horizon its trailing hems?

Or did your jewels scatter from you as you stumbled,

And is this crescent, with half of it gone, an anklet?

And has yearning changed you, so that you have grown paler,

With these breezes around you as reproachers?

If you have become unadorned, every lovely woman

Like you goes to sleep unadorned.

The world bids you farewell and welcomes darkness,

As children bade their tender mother farewell.

Night is only the darkness of grief to one who

Has stayed and kept faith, while those he loves have gone.

Why does night linger so long beside me?

Am I, so wasted by love, mere ruins?

It seems to me this night’s face had been

An omen for lovers—and the omen has come true.

Poor souls, they seek a way through what has befallen them,

While Time likewise schemes in their affairs.

O night, let dawn guide our souls

Back to us, for human souls are wanderers within you.

And I am no sluggard playing coy; yet if you are,

How ugly those two traits: black and slothful!
