Tell this fawn who keeps away:

Indeed, my tears have wounded my eye.

I pass the night; neither night's full moon comforts me,

nor does its brother visit me in sleep.

is slower than my stumbling hope.

Whoever is not like me must not claim

love for her of the languid gaze.

I am the one who spread love's renown

among the people like a widely current proverb,

from a people who attained the heights, great man

after great man, to whom glory is ascribed.

They dwelt on glory's summits, and none besides them

among those who boast ascends the peak.

by one who lies fearing the Subduer's crushing grip.

It shames me not to be called a man of passion,

or to be called Majnun of Banu Amir.

And love finds its way to a youth's heart more surely

than the soul's need finds its way to thought.

A man's reason is bewildered by it; is there, then,

any remedy for my bewildered mind?

slender-waisted as a fresh green branch.

He demands patience of me—but is anyone a lover

whom the anguish of patient endurance has not slain?

    over my surging, overflowing tears?

its beginning kills in the end.
