Darkness has deepened. O Layla, have we no

Soul, or does death, like sustenance, shun us?

Morning comes upon us without shrouding us,

And night leaves us without burying us.

The sun rises, reviving us, yet we have no

Provision for life; why, Lord, do You keep us alive?

It lights a world of evil, all of it injustice,

Like a shadow with light enfolded within it.

God fashioned it as an act of mercy,

And after God, mankind fashioned it anew.

Which of them has not wrongfully transgressed? Have they found

A nation that has not declared a remaking after God's?

Lord, it has become rock—unyielding and shameless—

What You had once, before that, created as clay.

Human love is favoritism, and my eye has lost sight of

The loving among them, and those who show favor.

As though I were no human being like them,

Nor counted—not even among the hypocrites.

O soul, woe to you! Be still, untroubled.

They came to be, and so did we, though neither they nor we chose it.

    إن الذي هو سؤانا يُساوينا

    Each of us will one day come to his death;

Whoever is other than us is our equal.

Vice tries them and makes them laugh,

While virtue tries us and makes us weep.

Every beautiful woman among people, if she suffers,

Suffers for her virtues, not for our faults.

Let no outward show of ours deceive you, brimful

Of smiles; delve deep into our hidden selves.

The hypocrite's face is a hypocritical mirror,

Making ugliness beautiful to the eyes.

If we baffle you, look into our consciences:

Our consciences are nothing but our mirrors.

What have I stored up from this world, that it should delight me?

How can our hopes be beguiled by this world?

Today drawing near, aiming toward eighty.

Time has whittled him a pen from his own bone,

And never ceases making it tremble in writing and recording.

A skin binding a book; when his lifetime composed it

Out of misery, it named it 'Pauper.'

Yet I labor on unceasingly, remaining while time carries us away.

Time bent my spear-shaft after a battle

In which youth had been our fields of combat.

How many intervals we had in time, when

    Fortunate chances came our way!

How many aspirations we had, soaring among hopes,

Through them came Paradise's breath from our valley's flowers!

How many laughs we had in youth, which filled

Youth's mouth with birdsong and melody!

To the earth; O insects of the earth, console us!

O you whom feet tumble over, if life is ordained

For you, it will be through the hands of helpers.

Layla, you are nothing but a tear that has gathered

    Beauty, purity, pains, and sorrow.

Layla, did your beauty anger the flowers, so that

Longing adorned them with fragrance and color?

Layla, did you put the boughs to shame, so that

Nature wove these garments for them as adornment?

Layla, alas for my yearning! If only her adornment

Were pearls other than those our tear ducts shed!

In God's hand, rather than something held in ours.

That the lowliest among us, through money, becomes our highest!

And money set the laws in authority over poverty.
