It beats like a heart wasted by sickness,

as though sorrows collide within it.

It has a face; I keep reading from

its lines what the pen writes.

    فكلُّ يومٍ يجدُّ لي ندمُ

    It reminds me of my life slipping away;

so every day brings me fresh regret.

    Nor, when its hands move,

does pain creep into any heart but mine.

Nor, when its calamities come swiftly,

do they crowd anywhere but in hearts’ narrow confines.

It honors no obligations to its people,

even if obligations are honored among them.

And I see it as nothing but time—do not

bliss and afflictions revolve within it?

O sister of the constellation-bearing heavens, have

these shadows veiled the rising stars of good fortune?

And will good fortune return once more,

    smiling after this frown?

And how firmly sorrow lodges in our breasts when

the nights of life have begun to retreat!
