    Come, and if you will not be gracious, be gentle.

    For it is enough for me that we meet at the hour of death.

    And if you wish me to live on, though love has destroyed

    its own—otherwise, command me to follow them.

    فلما دنا يومي رضيتُ بما بقي

    And once I would not be content with a world so vast;

    but when my day drew near, I was content with what remained.

    And what recourse have I, if I have no recourse?

    And can I defend myself once you have shot your glance?

    Fear God: I cannot withstand every glance.

    And if you do not fear Him, have mercy on me and take pity.

    Was it not enough that your cheeks were a temptation

    to us, that you adorn those cheeks with a yashmak veil?

    And you heightened your neck's allure until you left me

    dying to the lament of the ring-necked doves.

    فكيفَ انثنتْ عنهُ المعاطفُ ينطقِ

    And your eyes have sent a breath of life into the jewelry;

    so however your body's curves turn away from it, it speaks.

    And they cast upon it a touch of your passion,

    so it remains yellow, dreading separation.

    And your breasts push it away, then draw it close,

    as is love's habit with the fawning lover.

    وما كلُّ شعرٍ بالكلامِ المنمقِ

    From it I learned what my reed pen embroiders;

    and not all poetry lies in ornamented speech.

    And verse is nothing but fortune; many are those I see

    still suffering through it, not yet granted success.

    So if they envy me an Arab trait,

    then, ah, many a bull camel is made a she-camel if I bellow!

    And why are they lovesick, though they have never known love?

    So speak to whoever has never known passion, and he will fall in love.

    فقلتُ لهُ ناشدّتُكَ اللهَ فارفقِ

    And a reproacher gestured to me when you passed;

    so I said to him, 'I adjure you by God: be gentle.

    فإنْ تتحركُ هذه القوسُ يمرقِ

    I see the soul as an arrow lodged between your jaws;

    and if this bow moves, it will dart forth.'

    And I humored him until he said, 'She has gone

    out of sight.' I said, 'Now be silent—or bray.'

    And the lion has no braver heart than mine; yet,

    whenever I see gazelles frolicking, I take fright.

    ولكنْ متى ما مسَّهُ الدمعُ يورقِ

    And I have a pen like a fang, ever sharp;

    but whenever tears touch it, it puts forth leaves.

    ولكنَّ شيئاً إن عرى البدرَ يمحقِ

    Nor am I one to fold his side over sorrow;

    but I bear something that would blot out the full moon if it befell it.

    Gently—do not destroy me; perhaps

    you will one day see a crown's gleam upon my head.

    بلى ومتى أطلقتُ للسبقِ أسبقِ

    And no trait has held me back among the sons of time;

    yes indeed—and whenever I am loosed to race, I come first.

    And whoever has a soul that sees the earth as a single circuit

    must one day ascend to the heavens.

    And give me time: let me light its horizons, then go out,

    just as the breaths of your love have extinguished my radiance.

    Are not mine the words that, whether I string them together

    or their beads lie scattered, sparkle?

    متى هجستْ أفكارُهُ يتدفقِ

    And enough for you is a heart between my sides, itself a poet;

    whenever its thoughts stir, it pours forth.

    And you will find none but me who speaks, when he weeps,

    for your eyes, of what the heart endures and has endured.
