    This darkness, with grief within my breast,

    is like coal that has intensified the embers' glow.

    طفئتْ من الأجواءِ في بحرِ

    And it is as though my breaths held flames

    from the skies, quenched in a sea;

    and as though my sorrows held sparks

    crowding the stars, so they do not move.

    فابعث لها بنسائمِ الفجرِ

    O night, you have torn hearts with grief;

    so send them the breezes of dawn.

    How long will you fold me up and unfold me?

    The cloak has worn out from folding and unfolding.

    Your life, O darkness, has never lengthened

    except to make my life fall short of yours.

    Then if I die while you still have breath,

    save your dawn for me until the Resurrection.

    And when life's night grows dark, leave,

    O night, a lamp upon my grave.

    The sky and I are rivals over a moon,

    ever since my full moon put its full moon to shame.

    They veiled him in darkness, as

    a coy woman lets down her braided locks.

    لكَ أسوةٌ بالجفنِ والخصرِ

    O full moon, do not grieve, though you are ailing;

    you have solace in the eyelid and the waist.

    وجمالُ ذاتِ الخدرِ في الخدرِ

    And if you veil yourself, there is love in veiling;

    and a secluded lady's beauty lies within her bower.

    Were you our witness when we were joined as

    the mind joins secret to secret—

    two lovers, roaming freely in delight,

    yet both held captive by their longings?

    One is the other's love, and the other is

    enamored in return, like the wine-drinker and the wine.

    Lips upon lips—and the loveliest way

    to find love is lips upon lips.

    O full moon, it was a night, and it passed

    like sparrows alighting upon pools.

    We spent the night with lip pressed to lip

    awhile, and with breast pressed to breast.

    I complain without grievance, and he excuses me

    for love—and love counts as an excuse.

    Like doves, in seeming tears and love—

    have not the two lovers met within a nest?

    ضاعَ الرشاءُ اليومَ في البئرِ

    Never can I send forth a hope after that;

    today the well-rope is lost within the well.

    O you who healed Time's eye, though

    love's sight is nothing but Time's blindness,

    think of me as a book you own,

    and read even two letters from my breast.

    And why neglect me, when you see

    the alphabet's wāw counted as part of ʿAmr?

    Indeed, those whom you have forsaken were created

    like bees, which cannot live without flowers.

    So even if you have hurt me for a time,

    love has both ease and hardship.

    أفليسَ يرجى الوصلُ للهجرِ

    Wealth is hoped for in poverty, wretched as it is;

    is reunion not hoped for in estrangement?

    If you draw away, you draw nearer to my hope,

    and Time's course is full of reversals.

    كم يخرجُ الماءُ من الصخرِ

    And when you are cruel, you make me hope still more;

    how often water springs from rock!

    And within my ribs is a heart I soothe

    sometimes with promises, and sometimes with patience.

    Whoever once gathered sweetness from fruit,

    if it turns bitter, let him bear the bitterness.
