    فوردُها من خدودكَ افتضحا

    Turn me away from the roses, and give me the cup to drink;

    For its rose is put to shame by your cheeks.

    فحينَ مرَّ النسيمُ بي نفحا

    And it had complained to the breeze of its shame;

    So when the breeze passed me, it wafted fragrance.

    And rise with us to drink aged wine in the morning;

    And be generous with it, for time has been generous.

    As though it were joy upon the liver,

    Dispelling its worries and sorrow.

    وآس بها القلب إنهُ قرِحا

    So polish the soul with it, for it has rusted;

    And heal the heart with it, for it is wounded.

    And say to whoever foolishly reproached me:

    It did us no harm that a barker barked.

    Do you not see the wine jar, its blood now flowing,

    As though it had been wounded by your glances?

    It pours forth wine, as though its flame were,

    Beneath the darkness, a ray of the midmorning sun.

    Lighter to me than the one for whom I pined,

    In spirit, and fainter in form than wasting sickness.

    And if you see worry killing my joy,

    Then see how it revives joy.

    No sooner had dawn withdrawn in sorrow

    At the horizon than it saw you and brightened.

    And the birds had been upon their pulpit,

    Tongue-tied; but when you poured it, they sang out.

    And Arabian jasmine and jasmine, out of envy,

    Both fell prostrate, each upon its branch.

    فحينَما لاحَ وجهكَ اصطلحا

    They vied in beauty for a while;

    But when your face shone forth, they made peace.
