Neither a man's adornment nor wealth exalts him,

nor does a paternal or maternal uncle ennoble him.

Only the man rises to eminence

whose resolve is firm, whom no terrors turn aside.

He shows you in himself, in what he undertakes,

that souls are sword blades and people are heroes.

    وكل حالٍ توافي بغدها حالُ

    He does not falter if his adverse circumstances thwart him;

and every state is followed by another.

Did not Umar tend pregnant she-camels? Do you then

take eminence to be a valley's floor with herds of camels?

And did anything but his own self make him a leader? And are

hopes attained except through the soul's toil?

He saw guidance and unveiled it to humankind as a moon,

filling the eyes, while most people were astray.

    ولا يخيبُ امرءٌ في الحق فعَّالُ

    And he strove to champion the Guide and his call;

nor does a man who labors for truth fail.

    وإنما شهواتُ النفسِ أغلالُ

    And he freed his soul from what it sought out of passion;

for the soul's desires are nothing but shackles.

And no one distracted him from anyone else,

as though he were a father and the people children.

Thus the world trembled in awe of him,

until proud kings' thrones gave way and came crashing down.

And his roar terrified the lions of the horizons,

while lions and cubs filled its horizons.

So he made the earth firm, casting into its reaches

battalions that were mountains upon the earth.

And he extended his hopes in every direction,

with neither throne nor crown nor wealth.

And if a man is human by virtue of his adornment,

then he is merely a statue among people.

And among humankind are men like stars; when

a youth does what they did, he attains what they attained.
