  1. كان لي قلب فيا عجبي

    ليس في جنبي سوى أثره

    I had a heart—oh, how strange!

    Nothing remains in my side but its trace.

  2. ضاع مني فابحثوا تجدوا

    في ابتسام الحسن أو نظره

    I lost it; search, and you will find it

    In beauty's smile or in its gaze.

  3. ويحه قلباً أعيش على

    صفوة عيشي على كدره

    Alas for that heart! I live, despite

    My life's serenity, upon its sorrow.

  4. يرتقي كالنسر ثم ترى

    مرتقاه عين منحدره

    It soars like an eagle; then you see

    Its ascent is its very descent.

  5. ههنا قلب وحامله

    ميت الأمن على حذره

    Here is a heart, and its bearer

    Is bereft of peace, despite his caution.

  6. ذاب ذوب العطر مذ وقدت

    للهوى نار على زهره

    It melted like perfume, since there blazed

    A fire of passion upon its blossom.

  7. ضره ما كان منفعة

    نفعه ما كان من ضرره

    Its harm is what was a benefit;

    Its benefit, what was harmful to it.

  8. عابس كالليل ليس به

    أمل إلا سنا قمره

    Sullen as night, it has no

    Hope but the radiance of its moon.

  9. وهنأ قلبه وصاحبه

    قد بنا الدنيا على حجره

    And his heart was at ease, while its owner

    Had built the world upon his rock.

  10. تقرص الآلام مهجته

    مثل قرص الوحش من ظفره

    Pains pinch his soul

    Like pinching a wild beast by its claw.

  11. والحديد الصلب تحسبه

    صورة عمياء من صوره

    And you would think hard iron

    A blind likeness among its forms.

  12. لم يلن إلا بمطرقة

    من قضاء اللَه أو قدره

    It softened only beneath a hammer

    Of God's judgment or His decree.

  13. وسؤال لا جواب له

    أي ذين الحلو في ثمره

    And a question that has no answer:

    Which of these two bears sweet fruit?

  14. لو يبين الحلو خالقه

    كيف يسقى المر من مطره

    If the sweet one reveals its Maker,

    How is the bitter one watered by His rain?
