وبيand I have زهرةa flower فيin جانبthe bank of النيلthe Nile قدhas already نمتgrown
فرفso it fluttered عليهاover her إذwhen يروحit goes at evening وإذand when يغدوit goes at dawn
And I have a flower that has grown beside the Nile.
A flower grew by the Nile, nourished
So it fluttered over her at evening and at dawn.
As the dawn breaks and the eve stills
لطافتهits gentleness فيin طبعهاher nature الحبlove والرضاand contentment
وتيارهand its current فيin طبعهاher nature الهجرestrangement والصدand rejection
Its gentleness in her nature is love and contentment.
Its nature is love and pleasure
And its current in her nature is estrangement and rejection.
His tide is departure and disdain
ويحكيand mirrors وفاءthe fidelity of النيلthe Nile فيضthe flood of وعودهاher promises
وياand oh شدgreatly ماhow ينحطsinks منfrom بعدهاafter them الوعدthe promise
The flood of her promises mirrors the Nile's fidelity.
The Nile tells of loyalty in its flooding and promises
And oh, how low the promise sinks afterward!
Yet how often a promise falls after her
وفيand at زمنa time تصفوshe becomes serene عليtoward me كماjust as صفاit became clear
وفيand at زمنa time ماnot منfrom تكدرهاher becoming clouded بدescape
And at times she grows serene toward me, as it grows clear.
At times as clear as it flows
And at times there is no escaping her clouded mood.
At others, turbid without cease
وواللَهand by God ثمthen اللَهGod إنindeed حلاوةa sweetness

And by God, then by God, indeed a sweetness
By God, by God the sweetness
From the Nile appears to both eyes in her mouth.
Of the Nile in her mouth appears
وإنيand indeed I وإياهاand she علىin ظمإthe thirst of الهوىlove

And she and I, thirsting with love—
She and I thirst for love
I am the mouth—this is love—and she is the cheek.
I the mouth, love the cheek
