لكلِّ امرئٍ أجلٌ منتظرُ

ويبقى من الذاهبينَ الأثرْ

An appointed end awaits every person.

Every person has a waiting fate,

And a trace of the departed remains.

And a trace remains of those departed.

يردِّدُهُ الناسُ جيلاً فجيلاً

يردِّدُهُ الناسُ جيلاً فجيلاً

ويروونهُ زمراً عن زمرْ

ويروونهُ زمراً عن زمرْ

People repeat it, generation after generation,

People repeat it generation after generation,

And they recount it, one group from another.

And groups recount it to groups.

ترى فيهِ نفسُ الفتى مثلما

ترى فيهِ نفسُ الفتى مثلما

ترى في المرآةِ وجوهَ البشرْ

ترى في المرآةِ وجوهَ البشرْ

In it the young man's soul is seen, just as

In it the young man's soul sees itself

You see human faces in the mirror.

As it sees the faces of men in a mirror.

فذلكَ مرآتهُ للنفوسِ

فذلكَ مرآتهُ للنفوسِ

وهاتيكَ مرآتها للصدرْ

وهاتيكَ مرآتها للصدرْ

So that is his mirror for souls,

So it is a mirror for souls,

And that other is its mirror for the chest.

While these are a mirror for hearts.

وما الناسُ إلا حديثٌ يدومُ

وما الناسُ إلا حديثٌ يدومُ

فالخيرُ خيرٌ والشرُّ شرْ

فالخيرُ خيرٌ والشرُّ شرْ

And people are but a tale that endures:

For people are but a tale that endures.

So good is good, and evil is evil.

So good is good, and evil is evil.
