ألاAh! أيهاO القلبُthe heart لاdo not تيأسِdespair
وأيتهاand O النفسُthe soul لاdo not تيأسيdespair
Ah, O heart, do not despair!
O heart, do not despair,
And O soul, do not despair!
And O soul, do not despair,
أَئِنْis it because نفرُّواthey frightened away الظبيَthe gazelle لمdid not تأنساyou two find comfort
لوحشةِin the loneliness of ليليmy night فلمand so did not آنسِI find comfort
Is it because they frightened the gazelle away that you two found no solace
If the deer fled, did you not find comfort
In my night's loneliness, so I found none?
In the loneliness of my night, though I found no comfort?
وضاقتْand closed in بيon me الأرضُthe earth حتىuntil كأنيas though I
منfrom الضيقِanguish أمسيتُI came to be فيin محبسٍa prison
And the earth closed in on me, till it was as though I
The earth has narrowed around me, as if
Had ended up, from anguish, in a prison.
From the constriction I have become imprisoned.
دعاهُleave it, you two يُحَجَّبْهmay veil it داجيthe gloom of الهمومsorrows
فماso not تطلعِrises الشمسُthe sun فيin الحِندِسِpitch darkness
Leave it; let the gloom of sorrows veil it,
Worry obscured him, calling him to veil himself,
For the sun does not rise in pitch darkness.
Thus the sun does not rise in the Howdah.
وإلاand if not تُعيناyou two help علىtoward سلوةٍsolace
فصبراًthen be patient علىwith الأعينِthe eyes النُعسِdrowsy
And if you two will not help me find solace,
Unless you both help me find solace,
Then patience with those languid eyes!
Then patience upon the drowsy eyes.
I knew you both as طائريtwo birds of بانةٍa ben tree
وعودكماand your bough خَضِرٌgreen مكتسيclothed in leaves
I knew you both as two birds in a ben tree,
I knew you both to be a loving bird,
And your bough was green, clothed in leaves.
And your promises were green and flourishing,
فأيبسهُthen dried it حرُّthe heat of هذاthis الهوىpassion
وماءand the sap of الصباyouth فيهِwithin it لمdid not ييبسِdry up
Then the heat of this passion dried it,
But the heat of this passion has withered it
Though youth's sap within it had not dried.
And the water of youth in it did not dry up.
وسامكماand subjected you both to الشوقُlonging هذاthis الهوانhumiliation
وساءكماand pained you both فيin الهوىlove ماwhat يُسيcauses pain
And longing subjected you both to this humiliation,
And longing has clad you both in this humiliation,
And what brings pain in love has pained you both.
And the passion has clothed you in what adorns you.
وإنيand indeed I ليحزننيtruly saddens me بعدَafter ذاكَthat
أنthat يذهبَshould go away الحبُّlove بالأنفسِwith the souls
And after that, it truly saddens me
It saddens me after that
That love should carry off souls.
That love will leave with the souls.
فياso may أنسَgive solace to اللهُGod أهلthe people of الهوىlove
ومنand those who يخلقونَare created بلاwithout مؤنسِa comforting companion
So may God comfort lovers,
So may God acquaint the people of passion,
And those created without a companion.
And those who are created without a comforter.
ترىyou see الصبَّthe lovesick one تحسبهُyou think him ميتاًdead
ضجيعاًlying down علىupon القبرِthe grave لمhas not يُرمسِbeen buried
You see the lovesick man and think him dead,
You see the youth, believing him dead,
Lying upon the grave, unburied.
Lying on the grave, not embalmed.
وحسبُand sufficient for بنيthe children of الشوقِlonging أنthat يعرفواthey be recognized
بذلَby the abasement of رؤسهمُtheir heads النُّكسِbowed down
And the children of longing need only be recognized
And it is enough for the passionate people to know
By the abasement of their bowed heads.
By sacrificing their heads bowed down.
لقدindeed ضلَّwent astray بينَbetween الهوىpassion والعيونِand the eyes
رأيُthe judgment of الفتىthe young man الحازمresolute الأكيسِmost discerning
Indeed, between passion and eyes, astray has gone
The opinion of the wise and prudent young man was lost
The judgment of the resolute, most discerning youth,
Between passion and eyes.
كماjust as ضيعَruined العقلُreason أهلَthose endowed with العقولِintellect
بينَbetween المدامةِwine والأكؤسِand the cups
As reason has ruined those endowed with reason
Just as sanity lost the sane people
Between wine and cups.
Between the wine and cups.
فياso O كوكبَstar of الصبحِthe morning إماwhenever بزغتْyou rise
تألقgleam تاجاًas a crown علىupon الأرؤسِthe heads
So, O morning star, whenever you rise,
O morning star, if you rise,
Gleam as a crown upon heads.
Shine like a crown over heads.
وياand O طلعةَface of البدرِthe full moon إماwhenever سفرتِyou unveil yourself
كماas تسفرُunveils her face الخودُthe fair maiden فيin المجلسِthe gathering
And O face of the full moon, whenever you unveil yourself,
And O crescent moon, if you journey,
As a fair maiden unveils herself in the gathering,
As the cheek journeys in the sitting place.
وياand O غادةَmaiden of الروضِthe garden إماwhenever جررتِyou trail
ذيولَthe trains of الحرائرِsilks والسندسِand fine silk brocade
And O maiden of the garden, whenever you trail
And O meadow’s flower, if you strut,
The trains of silks and fine brocade,
The train of the gentlewomen and silks.
وياand O أُذُنَear of الريحِthe wind إماwhenever وعيتِyou take in
سلامَthe greeting of ذويthose possessed of الكلفِardent love البؤَّسِthe wretched
And O ear of the wind, whenever you hear
And O ear of the wind, if you understand,
The greeting of the wretched, love-stricken ones,
The greetings of the miserable and wretched.
وياand O شفةَlip of الوردِthe rose إماwhenever لثمتِyou kiss
عيوناًeyes تفتحُopen فيin النرجسِthe narcissus
And O lip of the rose, whenever you kiss
And O lip of the rose, if you kiss,
Eyes opening in the narcissus,
Eyes that open in the Narcissus.
وياand O لمةَtress of الآسِthe myrtle فينانةluxuriant
كُلَمَّةِlike the tress of ذيone possessed of الصَّيِّدِhaughty bearing الاشوسِfierce and scowling
And O luxuriant tress of myrtle,
And O bite of the Myrtle, a smoothness
Like the locks of one proud and fierce,
Like the wrist of the tender and delicate.
وياand O قضبَboughs of البانِthe ben tree مياسةٌswaying gracefully
ترنحُreeling كالأهيفِlike the slender-waisted one المحتسيthe drinker
And O swaying boughs of the ben tree,
And O cane of frankincense, a bending
Reeling like a slender-waisted drinker,
Like the flexible and slender.
خذيcarry للمحجبِto the veiled one عنيfrom me السلامَthe greeting
وقوليand say نسيتَyou have forgotten فتىًa young man ماnot نسيhe has forgotten
Carry my greeting to the veiled one,
Take to the one veiled from me greetings,
And say: "You have forgotten a youth who has not forgotten."
And say, “You forgot a man who did not forget.”
