Do not blame the lover for speaking openly.

Such is perfume: its way is to spread its scent.

How can a fire stay hidden among reproachers,

When winds assail it, gust after gust?

And love's sickness shows upon the lover,

However much he wishes it not to show.

Longing has overcome its people; you see them—

One fallen dead, and another wasted and laid low.

And it is as though passion, when it bought souls,

Found the souls of the noble cheapest of all.

O brother in love, I see love as nothing but

A wounding gaze and a wounded heart.

Then whoever lives beyond that has lived

To weep over what ails him, or to lament.

And sometimes you see a bird struggle to move,

For a moment after you have seen it slaughtered.

    تِ فهيِّءْ للعاشقينَ الضريحا

    This love is nothing but the stupor of death;

So prepare the tomb for lovers.

It makes the soul crave beauty; and if

It craves it, it finds beauty miserly.

And between the eyes and the heart it is an image,

    Erased whenever the glances wander.

Ah, how painful passion is, and how astonishing

A body that stays sound despite passion!

I had scarcely come to know ardent longing when

    Its cares tormented me sorely.

And I grew so used to suffering that it is a comfort

To me to see no one at ease.

And when life grows narrow for a soul,

I find the valley of death spacious.
