    فسلهُ لماذا غالَ قلبي وأبقاني

    Passion for you spares no human soul;

So ask it why it slew my heart and kept me alive.

Must love bring me anguish every day,

And sorrow, when all space has grown too narrow for my sorrows?

    تجاذبني الأولى فيدفعني الثاني

    And here I am between passionate longing and youth;

The first pulls at me, and the second pushes me.

And passion has left of my body nothing but a speck,

Like what the cups have left of a drunken man's reason.

Toward that encampment, when the east wind passes, I almost

Fly, though no pair of wings bears me.

And my eye sees this sun as though it were—

Having recalled your face's beauty to me—two suns.

They worshipped it for its beauty, in error,

And my faith keeps me from doing the same.

Yet they bowed to the sovereignty of its beauty,

While your beauty is sovereign over every sovereign.

They said, 'You resemble the gazelle in neck and glance,

And resemble a bān branch in its slender grace.'

And I swear: the gazelles in their turning glances,

And the branches' slenderness, are but two likenesses of you.

Yours is the beauty of all the fair; and whoever

Loves you has every excellence in his poetry.

And you are the one who brought wasting illness to my body,

And you are the one who drew my eyelids apart.

So if it is said of me, 'He died a lover,'

Then tell them, 'Mercy for the dead is none of my concern.'

If you show no pity while some life remains in me,

Then how will it be when they wrap me in my shrouds?

And if the reproachers read what I conceal,

Then two lines have been inscribed in tears upon my cheeks.

Had you wished, they would not have known what passed between us,

Even were those who envy me over you of the jinn.

Time has refused to let a lover find a companion

Among humankind without a thousand devils in the way.

Would that the horizon's stars would plunge

Upon every treacherous talebearer against the lovers!

And would that the fires of Hell would give them

Hearts blazing with anguish, on top of the flames!

And would that the earth would level its mountains!

For how many among them are like Radwa and Thahlan!

And before them, I did not know that among humankind

There were people in the shape of idols.

O you who reproached me for longing—what do you think?

This reproach of yours has drawn me deeper into longing.

And I am smitten with a fawn whose coquetry has left of me

Only the cares and sorrows you see.

I fell in love with him, thirsty for love, and quenched was

My heart; yet he made me desperately thirsty again.

And my fate made me laugh awhile in his nearness,

But afterward it made me weep.

And you will find the world no different from how I found it,

Nor all other times any different from my own.

And O my neighbors, my soul's suffering has grown great:

Is there no suffering lover for this suffering lover?

I saw my heart, with sorrow closing its eyelid,

As a drowsy man's eyelids are lined with the kohl of sleep.

And it had been my cup at love's gathering,

When love was my wine and beloveds my sweet basil.

And in love there is solace, but I see

That a needy man's self-consolation is no solace.

    فما شرفُ الأملاكِ من غيرِ تيجانِ

    And this passion is a crown upon every lover;

What honor, then, have kings without crowns?
