Lend me your eyes, O my reproacher,

so that perhaps I may see truth as falsehood.

For my eye has been colored by my heart,

as glass is colored by the liquid within.

Both of us see her—but what a gulf! No one

has grieved at bereavement like the bereaved.

And if the prey had the eye of the one

who hunts, it would not be beguiled by the snare-setter.

    فَويْلاهُ من شَرَهِ الآكلِ

    I fell in love, and you fed my body to wasting;

so, alas for the eater's greed!

With my clothes upon me, it is as though spring

had clothed both sides of a barren land.

My eyes, with their waves of tears, seem

a vast sea, the eyelid like its shore.

It is as though, with my tears in my eye,

I see my shroud in the corpse-washer's hand.

God is my help! Am I anything but a youth,

striving in earnest, while my fate is like a jester?

And he whose people are ruled by the ignorant

is harmed by the wise man's disposition.

    أنا فيهِ كالقمرِ الآفلِ

    It is as though time were remnants of night's darkness;

within it I am like the setting moon.

I submitted to its judgment, in obedience

to a revelation descending upon my heart.

And whoever has the one he loves as his judge

sees the unjust judge as a just one.

They fault my thinness for love of her; then why

does the star on the horizon appear so thin?

And how can the polished sword be faulted,

when the polisher's hand has thinned its edge?

    She is slender-waisted; so love

    fought us with slender spears.

And I marvel at my hope of union with her,

while some wishes are the death of hope.

    وما تحتَ ضدينِ من طائلِ

    She has two hearts: she loves and forgets;

and nothing of worth lies beneath two opposites.
