Upon the two parchments of cheek and neck,

I see two lines expressing rejection.

And she let her tresses fall, showing me

the exchange of my white days for black.

And sorrow cut me to pieces, and my tears were a sea,

so my grief’s Basīṭ measure turned into Madīd.

And when she struck down my heart with a glance,

I knew it was the poem’s central verse.

She has her faith, and I have mine, yet

I see the two hearts in a new faith.

And many a night passed, while the starry horizon

was like her neck beneath the necklaces.

And night’s darkness stood in terror, praying,

while the darkness of its sin filled all existence.

And the breaths of the breezes are electricity,

linking my heart with the cheeks.

And the glances hastened with what we wished,

confirming between us the sincerity of the vows.

So many a glance and many a breath—you see one

as a telegraph, and the other as a mail carrier.

So I once again see bliss, though I am not in it,

like a bough likened to bodily forms.

So, no welcome to the days of estrangement!

And O days of that union, return!
