ماnot لهمٍّfor any sorrow علىagainst الرضاcontentment منany (emphatic) ثبوتِpermanence
Spend the morning within us, O sorrows, and stay the night.
My worries have become part of me and my home
No sorrow can hold its ground against contentment.
They have no intention of being satisfied
قدindeed بلوناwe have experienced الصدودَrejection حتىuntil ألفناwe grew accustomed to
هُit كإلفِlike the familiarity of العييِّthe tongue-tied person طولَlength of السكوتِsilence
We have experienced rejection until we grew used
We've endured the cold shoulders until we became accustomed
to it, as the tongue-tied to long silence.
Like the mute's accustomedness to long silences

And with Time we became as it
We've gone with time however it wished
willed, and as the calamities of dispersal willed.
And with the woes of distraction it desired

كلَّevery يومٍday تراميthe tossing about of العنكبوتِthe spider
The winds of calamity toss us about,
Winds of sorrows blow us hither and thither
every day, like a spider tossed about.
Like the spider spins its web wider each day

May God not protect anyone who loves despite treachery
May God not tend to one who loves only for tomorrow
a nasal-voiced beloved or a woman with silent ornaments.
A singing girl or a silent beauty decked in jewels
أحرامٌis it forbidden? ياO نفسُsoul أمor أحفظَI preserve الودَّaffection

Is it forbidden, O soul—or should I preserve affection
Forbidden o soul! Or should I preserve affection
when the one you loved has squandered it?
If one I love discards it from his essence?

My heart belongs only to one who guards the
My heart is not for any other than one who safeguards his heart
heart, whether you reject this or accept it.
Be that as you wish or as you are pleased

So if the beloved turns away from me,
So if my beloved turns away from me
then forsake him as in an irrevocable divorce.
Then shun him with the shunning of utter divorce

And seek the side of glory, and raise high
And seek the humble side and loftier
what the forefathers built for me—or else die.
What my ancestors built for me or else my demise
