ولا نقيضةٌ إلا ما جنى النسبُ
Or do descendants of her own stock plot against her?
A mother against whom her own descendants plot,
Nor is there any flaw except what kinship itself has wrought.
And no contradiction save what lineage has wrought.

She was for them the source of every noble distinction,
She was for them the source of every noble deed,
while they became the cause of the affliction time dealt her.
Yet they are the means by which time brings her calamity.

There is no fault in the pure Arabs when they speak
among non-Arabs—except that they are Arabs.
Among non-Arabs, save that an eloquent speaker is unintelligible.

Birds sing in differing voices, like humankind, yet
The birds sing variously, like mankind; yet
to the crow the nightingale’s rapture wins no praise.
Among Arabian thoroughbreds the joyful nightingale is not praised.

Long ages passed over her while she remained radiant,
Long ages passed over her while she remained radiant,
like the face of the sun, with no suspicion clinging to her.
Like the sun's face, with no doubts clinging to her.

Then darkness spread across all her horizons,
Then darkness spread through her sides,
like the full moon whose light the clouds have veiled.
Like a full moon whose light the clouds had partly blotted out.

Then she vanished, while the sun above us bore witness,
Then she vanished, while above us the sun bore witness,
as though it were an ember blazing in the sky.
As though it were an ember blazing in the sky.

Ask the stars how many generations have succeeded one another beneath them,
Ask the stars how many generations have passed them on,
while these meteors have never ceased to shine.
While these bright stars have never ceased to shine.

And ask people how many languages there are on earth—
the passing ages have renewed in splendor.
Ancient tongues whose splendor the ages have renewed.

We stand amazed while time makes sport of us;
While we linger in conceit, time makes sport of us;
we took no heed—and miserable indeed is the habit of amazement.
We have learned no lesson—and what a vile trait is conceit!

Affairs belong to whoever spends the night pursuing them;
Things are won by those who spend the night seeking them;
how can they endure when those who seek them are gone?
So how can they endure when their seekers are gone?

Time once was ours, and tongues united us;
Time once belonged to us, and our tongues bound us together;
now we belong to time, and fortune has reversed.
Now we belong to it, and the order is reversed.

Those before us hoped that we would be their successors;
And those who overturned us hoped we would succeed them;
today, could they look upon us after them, they would mourn.
Today, if they saw those who came after them, they would lament.

Shall we let the West distract us with its glitter,
while the sun-rising East makes us weep and itself sobs?
While the place where the sun rises makes us weep and itself sobs?

We have a river, sweet to whoever drinks from it;
We have a river sweet to those who drink it;
how can we leave it to slip away into the sea?
So how can we leave it to slip into the sea?

And any language that makes a man forget another
is a calamity pouring from his own mouth.
Is a calamity pouring from his mouth.

How long speech has endured beneath palace shade, through
the days of desert tents and tent ropes—
Days when there were desert tents and guy ropes,

The sun scorching it and the wind blowing upon it,
and it lacked shade and water and grass!
While it lacked shade, water, and grass.

I see the souls of humankind in all their differences; their worth
I see people's souls as varied, and their worth
lies, for me, in their capacity to be moved—not in might or rank.
To me is their capacity to be moved—not prestige or rank.

Have you not seen firewood rise and become flame
Have you not seen wood rise high and turn to flame,
when the wood was stirred by the touch of the blaze?
When the wood was moved by the touch of fire?

Shall we squander what time has preserved for us
Shall we squander what time has left us,
and shake out empty hands—with neither glory nor lineage?
And dust our hands off, with neither glory nor ancestral honor?

We would then be a glaring disgrace in the East;
Then we would be a flagrant disgrace in the East,
the East is of us, though within it we stand in ruins.
And the East, because of us, though we live there, would lie in ruins.

Far be it that all this shouting should help us:
This shouting is far from helping us; what
what good can a coward do when calamity strikes him with fear?
Good can a coward do when clamor terrifies him?

Whoever is powerless to ward off a calamity—
And whoever is unable to ward off a calamity,
his utmost is to meet it, seeking divine recompense.
At most, you will find him bearing it in hope of God's reward.

If languages flourish one day, there has already been guaranteed
secure for the Arabs every kind of glory among them.
To the Arabs every glory among them, by books.

Among metals are those whose luster the hand of rust strips away;
And among metals are those whose luster is swept away
gold alone does not rust.
By the hand of rust—yet gold does not rust.
