A throne as long as the orbit of the seven blazing stars,

with the sun in its crown, not an ornament of gold.

Its master greeted Time with the hand of honor,

and Time clasped his hand of glory and noble lineage.

Along its sides a light sparkled, drawn from

the light of the prince, his forefathers, and his father.

It draws souls near, yet its majesty drives them away,

like the sun's glitter upon Indian blades.

And never did it see Abbas's face before it

without beaming with pride and wonder.

My lord, in a day to which I have risen,

lies a secret of God's mercy, revealed to the ages.

A day Egypt longed for, before God granted her

her wishes, and her bond became unbroken.

    والدهرُ مجَّدها بالعلمِ والأدبِ

    Abbas brought her happiness, and God strengthened her;

and Time glorified her through learning and literature.

So her reach expanded, and her master grew strong,

and her suitor turned away from that desire.

And the Nile, since they linked it to the prince, has flowed,

vying with the Seine and Thames in lineage.

Like a bride led to her wedding, it struts in

    wondrous brocade or fresh fine silk;

or like a poem in praise of the mighty one, when

it stretches across the land as verse stretches through books.

O master of the Nile, who protects and guards it

from the schemes of one with burning rancor in his breast:

if Egypt's sons could, they would surely hide

this Nile within every eyelid that does not weep.

    إنب أرى الروعَ في آذيِّهِ الصخبِ

    So spread your hands, that it may flow seeking refuge in them;

indeed, I see terror in its clamorous waves.

These hearts have lodged you in their depths, so they have never

beaten, with you within them, except out of rapture.

They had been in anguish that spared them no burning pain,

and today they are well; without you, they would not be.

You [supported?] Egypt against a wind that overturned her,

as a ship is capsized amid the current and the swells.

You protected her when there was neither safety nor ease,

and brought her life while she lay in ruin.

So you were her shield against every calamity,

and you were her garden within her fertile abode.

    فلستُ أعجبُ إن قالوا أبو النُّجبِ

    You are her forefathers' nobility made manifest;

so I am not surprised if they call you 'Father of the noble.'

You rose through two uplifters—ancestry and lofty lineage—

and through two supporting arms—diligence and striving.

So live on for Egypt; none but you has shown her

true resolve, while the days are steeped in falsehood.

Time belongs to those who strive with discernment,

using judgment, while it toys with the heedless.
