كالعلمِlike knowledge فيin أوهامِthe delusions هذيthese العوامْcommon folk
Poetry in the heads of those who claim it
Poetry in the minds of those who claim
Is like knowledge in the delusions of these common folk.
Is like science in the delusions of these commoners
محرمٌforbidden إلاexcept علىto أهلهِits true practitioners
وكمand how many منof الجهّالِthe ignorant يأتيcommits الحرامْwhat is forbidden
It is forbidden except to its true practitioners;
Forbidden except to its rightful people
And how many of the ignorant commit what is forbidden!
And how many ignorant come to the unlawful
فانظرso look لمنat whoever أبصرتyou saw فيin كفهِhis hand
منهمamong them يراعاًa reed pen هلdo ...? ترىyou see ذاone with لجامْa bridle
So look at anyone you have seen holding
So look at those whom you saw in their palms
A reed pen among them: do you see one with a bridle?
Do you see a shepherd among them with a bridle?
وماand ... is not ابنُson of عمّارٍʿAmmār إذاwhen قستهُyou compare him
بجمعهمwith all of them فيin الشعرِpoetry إلاexcept إمامُa leader
And Ibn ʿAmmār, when you compare him
And Ibn 'Ammar when compared to them
With them all in poetry, is nothing but a leader.
In poetry is nothing but an imam
