أنا عن مخاطبةِ العوا

أنا عن مخاطبةِ العوا

ذلِ كالمصلي قد نوى

ذلِ كالمصلي قد نوى

I refrain from addressing the reproach—

I have turned away from conversing with the passionates,

—ers, like one at prayer who has set his intention.

Like one who prays with pure intention,

واللهِ لولا مقلتا

واللهِ لولا مقلتا

هُ لما تعلمنا الجوى

هُ لما تعلمنا الجوى

And by God, were it not for those two eyes

By God, were it not for the two beloveds,

of his, we would never have learned love's anguish.

We would not have known love's burning,

والقلبُ لا يهوى سوى

والقلبُ لا يهوى سوى

من كانَ علمهُ الهوى

من كانَ علمهُ الهوى

And the heart loves none but

And the heart inclines towards none,

the one who had taught it love.

But one whose knowledge is love.
