O night, you have stirred longings I conceal.

So ask the full moon about them, for the full moon knows them.

It saw that the true nature of this feeling was obscure,

so it came to reveal it to people through a likeness,

in an image of the full moon's beauty that we behold,

and we behold the full moon appearing as an image within it.

It comes with a skyful of its beauties

for my soul, yet I find it is not enough.

And the peace of eternity comes in its rays,

seeking on earth whoever on earth seeks it.

And how many messages the sky sends through it

to lovers; then it comes to them and delivers those messages.

It says, smiling, to the forsaken lover:

“Take me as a vision that has come from her whom you name.”

And to him driven far away into its distant reaches

by the hand of separation: “I bring her nearer to your eyes.”

And to him whom despair of love tormented, so he ceased to yearn:

“Look at me, and do not give up longing for her.”

As for me, the full moon came to me in proud splendor,

and said, “I have come with one of her qualities.”

So I said, “From her cheek, or from her glances?

Or from her coquetry, or from her refusal?

Or from her curves, or from her affections?

Or from her lips, or from her fruits?

Or from her languor, or from her coquettish movements?

Or from her turning to look, or from her swaying?

Be like her to me—a pull in my blood, and passion,

or be coquetry, and be enchantment, and be haughty pride.”

Then it said sadly, “I could do nothing but

snatch a smile that gleamed from her mouth.”
