يا طلعةَ البدرِ التمامِ

وقامةَ الغصنِ الرطيبِ

O countenance of the perfect full moon,

O the full moon's rising glow

and stature of the tender bough!

And the moist branch's graceful flow

ما شئتَ أني في الهوى

ما شئتَ أني في الهوى

لا بالملولِ ولا الغضوبِ

لا بالملولِ ولا الغضوبِ

Whatever you may wish, in love I am

Whatever you wished, my love for you

neither easily wearied nor quick to anger.

Is not out of distress or wrath

ليتَ الذي بكَ حينَ تنأ

ليتَ الذي بكَ حينَ تنأ

ى معرضاً مثل الذي بي

ى معرضاً مثل الذي بي

Would that what is in you, when you withdraw,

If only the one who wept over you when you turned away

turning away, were like what is in me.

Was like the one who weeps over me

كم بتُّ بعدكَ ليلةً

كم بتُّ بعدكَ ليلةً

أدعو بها للمستجيبِ

أدعو بها للمستجيبِ

How many a night I have spent since you left,

How many nights after you

calling during it to the one who answers.

Did I call unto the Responder

وشكوتُ هجركَ للصبا

وشكوتُ هجركَ للصبا

شكوى الغريبِ إلى الغريبِ

شكوى الغريبِ إلى الغريبِ

And I complained of your abandonment to the east wind,

And complained of your abandonment

a stranger's complaint to a stranger.

أمستْ ليالي ذا الجفا

أمستْ ليالي ذا الجفا

مثلَ الهمومِ على القلوبِ

مثلَ الهمومِ على القلوبِ

The nights of this estrangement have become

The nights of estrangement

like sorrows upon hearts:

Became burdensome sorrows in my heart

سوداءُ في لونِ الشبا

سوداءُ في لونِ الشبا

بِ وهمُّ أيام المشيبِ

بِ وهمُّ أيام المشيبِ

black in the color of youth,

Darkened in the hue of youth

and the sorrow of the days of gray hair.

And worries of aging's days
