أقولُI say لهاto her إذاwhen ساءلتْshe asks كيفَhow حالتيmy condition
أقلُّthe least مصابيmy suffering لوعةٌburning anguish أكلتْhas devoured قلبيmy heart
I say to her, when she asks how I am:
I say to her when she asks how I fare
The least of my suffering is a burning anguish that has devoured my heart.
My troubles are a grief that eats my heart
وعنديand I have وماand what عنديI have وهلand whether تجهلينهُyou are unaware of it
وأنتِand you التيwho علمتنيtaught me شغفَardor الحبِّlove
And I have what I have—can you be unaware of it,
And I have what I have, don't you know it
when you are the one who taught me love's ardor?
You who taught me passion's keen delight
حنانكِyour mercy! ياO أختَsister العصافيرِthe sparrows خفةًin lightness
وياand O ضرَةَfemale rival الطاووسِthe peacock فيin التيهِhaughtiness والعجبِand vanity
Have mercy, O sister of the sparrows in lightness,
Your tenderness, sister to little birds
and O rival of the peacock in haughtiness and vanity.
So airy light! And you, belle of peacocks
وياand O بانتيmy bān tree ميليbend وياand O زهرتيmy flower انفتحيopen
وياand O نسمةَbreeze الأسحارِthe predawn hours فيin روضناour garden هبيblow
And O my bān tree, bend; and O my flower, open;
With wondrous feathers! You, my girl, tilt towards me
and O breeze of the predawn hours, blow in our garden.
My flower, open! Breath of dawn in our garden, blow!
فمالتْthen she leaned تعاطينيoffering me منfrom الثغرِthe lips كوثراًKawthar (Paradise's river)
حسبتُI imagined بهِthrough it حورَhouris الجنانِthe gardens of Paradise إلىto جنبيmy side
Then she leaned, offering me a Kawthar from her lips;
She would not give me from her lips a draught
through it I imagined the houris of Paradise beside me.
I thought it was the houris by my side
فياso O ربLord حسبيenough for me ماwhat مضىhas passed إنماnothing but الدُّthe world (first fragment)
نا(completion of 'world') عذابٌtorment وهذيand this روحُsoul عبدكَYour servant ياO ربيmy Lord
So, O Lord, what has passed is enough for me; the world is but
O Lord, enough is what has passed, for life
torment, and this is Your servant's soul, O my Lord.
Is but torment, and this the soul of Your servant, my Lord.
