He walked, as though a branch were swayed by the east wind.
He walked as though the breeze wafted the branch towards him,
And fragrance wafted from him within youth’s mantle.
And the fragrance it bore perfumed the robe of the morn.
ومرَّand he passed وعنand on جنبيهِhis two sides صفّاtwo rows of عواذلreproachful women
ومرَّ وعن جنبيهِ صفّا عواذل
كخطيlike two lines of ظلامٍdarkness شقَّcleft بينهماbetween them صبحُdawn
كخطي ظلامٍ شقَّ بينهما صبحُ
And he passed, flanked by two rows of reproachful women,
He passed by, and maids watched from behind their veils,
Like two lines of darkness, with dawn cleaving between them.
Like lines of darkness parted by the radiant dawn.
