يا طويلَ الصدِّ لا أع
لمُlast part of أعلم ('I know') ماwhat هذاthis التماديpersistence
لمُ ما هذا التمادي
O you whose shunning lasts so long, I do not
O you of enduring estrangement, I do not
know what this persistence means.

جمعَbrought together اللهُGod عليناupon us
جمعَ اللهُ علينا
بينَbetween هجرٍestrangement وبعادِand distance
بينَ هجرٍ وبعادِ
God has joined against us
God has brought upon us
estrangement and distance;

فرمانيso He cast me فيin بلادa land
فرماني في بلاد
ورماكمand He cast you (plural) فيin بلادِa land
ورماكم في بلادِ
so He cast me into one land,
He cast me into lands
and cast you into another.
And cast you into lands
أترىdo you think تجمعناwill bring us together الأfirst part of الأيام ('the days')
أترى تجمعنا الأ
يامُlast part of الأيام ('the days') أمor يومُthe Day التناديthe calling to one another
يامُ أم يومُ التنادي
Do you think we shall be reunited by the
