عدتْ على أقوامنا النحوسُ

عدتْ على أقوامنا النحوسُ

وضلَّلتهم هذهِ الكؤوسُ

Misfortunes have assailed our peoples.

Misfortune has returned to our people,

And these cups have led them astray.

And these cups have led them astray.

فانقلبتْ في الأرجلِ الرؤوسُ

فانقلبتْ في الأرجلِ الرؤوسُ

وخُرِّبَ العقلُ بها والكيسُ

وخُرِّبَ العقلُ بها والكيسُ

So heads have turned upside down among the feet.

Heads have been turned into feet,

And reason and the purse have been ruined by them.

Wits and reason destroyed by them.

فجلهم بينَ الورى بئيسُ

فجلهم بينَ الورى بئيسُ

النصحُ يا قومي هو النفيسُ

النصحُ يا قومي هو النفيسُ

So most of them are wretched among humankind.

Most of them are miserable among people.

Counsel, O my people, is what is precious.

Good advice, O my people, is precious.

والغيُّ تعمى عندهُ النفوسُ

والغيُّ تعمى عندهُ النفوسُ

فبصِّروها فالهدى مطموسُ

فبصِّروها فالهدى مطموسُ

And souls go blind in the presence of error.

Evil blinds souls.

So enlighten them, for guidance is effaced.

So make them see, for guidance is obscured.

وقد ضربنا مثلاً فقيسوا

وقد ضربنا مثلاً فقيسوا

And we have indeed given an example, so draw the comparison.

We have given an example, so judge accordingly.
