وكمand how many حارwere bewildered عشاقٌlovers ولاbut not مثلlike حيرتيmy bewilderment
إذاwhen شئتI wish يوماًone day أنto أسوءhurt حبيبيmy beloved
How many lovers have been bewildered, yet none as bewildered as I,
How many lovers have suffered, yet none like my torment,
When one day I wish to hurt my beloved.
If someday I wish to harm my beloved,
وهلand is there ليfor me قلبa heart غيرother than قلبيmy heart يسوؤهhurts him
ويأخذand claims ليfor me فيin الكبرياءpride نصيبيmy share
And have I a heart other than my own that could hurt him
Is there a heart but mine to suffer this?
And claim for me my share of pride?
Or take my share of pride?
ألاah ليتwould that ليfor me قلبينtwo hearts قلبa heart بحبهthrough love for him
مريضsick وقلبand a heart بعدafter ذاكthat طبيبيmy physician
Ah, would that I had two hearts: one, through love for him,
Oh, if only I had two hearts - one sick with love of him
Sick, and another, thereafter my physician.
And one, after that, to heal me,
وياand oh ليتwould that ليfor me نفسينtwo souls منfrom رئمa white gazelle روضةa meadow
ألوفtame ومنand from ذيpossessing لبدتينtwo manes غضوبwrathful
And oh, would that I had two souls: one from a meadow's white gazelle,
If only I had two souls - one, weary of the garden of companionship,
Tame, and one from a wrathful lion with two manes.
And another, vexed with separation.
وكيفand how بقلبwith a heart واحدsingle أحملI bear الهوىlove
عجيباًstrange علىto طبعيmy nature وغيرand not عجيبstrange
And how, with a single heart, can I bear love,
How can one heart bear this love,
Strange to my nature, and yet not strange?
So strange to my disposition, yet so natural?
فواللَهfor, by God إنindeed الحبlove خيرthe best of محاسنيmy virtues
وواللَهand by God إنindeed الحبlove شرthe worst of عيوبيmy faults
For, by God, love is the best of my virtues,
By God, love is the best of my qualities,
And, by God, love is the worst of my faults.
By God, love is the worst of my flaws!
