وأنواعُand the branches of العلومِlearning لهاfor it بحارُseas
I see my intellect as a waterwheel set turning,
And the branches of learning are its seas.

And I have a mind like a verdant garden,
My delectable knowledge is fruit within it.

كمثلِlike الليلِthe night فانشقَّthen split open لنهارُdaylight (apparent typo)
I took up the sciences, and ignorance had been
Like the night; then daylight broke through.

And humankind appeared to me a wondrous thing,
And every youth who sees a wonder is bewildered.

مُصَغَّرةًmade small ونحنُwhile we إذاًthen صغارُsmall
For the world is not as we once saw it,
In miniature, when we ourselves were small.

And ignorance indeed conceals all beauty,
As the sun's light is veiled by dust.

I see myself in a difficult position, as though
I had lost my way, with no beacon in my sea.

I shall do as my forefathers did: either
Achieve as they achieved, or end where they ended.

Great ambitions should lie beyond my reach.

Nor am I so weak of heart that
Homes and dwellings should fetter me.

I shall journey through the lands; whichever mountain pass
Receives me, that shall be my resting place.

And there is no shame for one striving for glory,
But remaining at home is a disgrace.

And what are pearls worth, fine pearls though they are,
If the oyster shells do not split open to reveal them?
