    Oh, the passion and flirtation

    From those wide eyes!

    من مرحٍ وكسلِ

    From gazelles, yet unlike gazelles,

    Made of playfulness and languor;

    في الحدقِ المكتحلِ

    From oryx, yet unlike oryx,

    In their kohl-lined eyes;

    From statues, yet unlike statues,

    In their consummate beauty.

    They approached, strutting, and were

    Nothing but slender spears.

    Then they cast a glance

    Bound up with death.

    Then they slipped away this way

    And that way, along paths,

    Each alone, in fear—

    How sweet this fear!

    Drawing away in shyness—

    How lovely such shyness is!

    Then they met, like the purity

    Of hope joined with hope.

    وهنَّ بعضُ الجذلِ

    United in gladness,

    And themselves a part of gladness;

    Differing in dispute,

    And beauty is the root of dispute.

    بحليها والحللِ

    This one makes that one jealous

    With her jewels and robes;

    And that one—part of her adornment

    Is her beauty without jewels.

    In rivalry—and beauty, for

    Fair women, is like shifting fortunes.

    Then a bewitching woman stepped forth,

    Swaying with a drunkard's sway.

    She lifts a waist that has never ceased

    To be weary of her buttocks.

    She sways in the palm of love

    As a hero's sword is swung.

    Standing, seated,

    Moving, yet she has not moved,

    Like the sun in its stillness

    And its shifting shadow.

    من خصرها والكفلِ

    Circling in an orbit

    Of her waist and buttocks;

    دَ فوقَ ذاكَ الطللِ

    And her bosom, like a palace built

    Above that ruin;

    And her waist, like an ascetic

    Secluded in the mountain.

    Every moan sets her swaying

    From a grieving soul beset by ills.

    So, to the oud's lament, she has

    Kept swaying, and has not yet ceased.

    As though it were made from my ribs,

    And if it weeps, she laughs for me.

    As though she were a sparrow

    Shaking itself free of wetness.

    She quivers like a bird now caught

    In the fowler's net.

    وكلُّنا ذو خبلِ

    She sways, but not from madness,

    And each of us is mad;

    She plays, but not from care,

    And each of us has cares.

    Gazing at one man,

    Lowering her eyes from another,

    ومقلةٍ لمقلِ

    From brow to brow,

    And from one eye to other eyes;

    Like the sun to the lover,

    And her hair, to him, like Saturn.

    مثلَ الضُّحى والطفلِ

    Smiling, frowning,

    Like morning light and dusk;

    Leaping, motionless,

    She leaned, yet has not yet leaned.

    تقولُ لم تعتدلِ

    Among us, you say she has straightened;

    You say she has not straightened.

    And you may think she has been debased

    Among us, yet she has not been debased.

    She enacts what was learned

    By her lips from my kisses:

    So haste within slowness,

    And slowness within haste.
