    وَقَفتُ دَمعي عَلى أَطلالِهِ الجونِ

    A dwelling lies desolate, bereft of those like wide-eyed oryx;

I devoted my tears to its dark ruins.

Indeed, those who left it against my will—

I kept my covenant with them, but they forsook me.

I called to them, though separation kept me far from them,

with the cry of one whose innards burned with grief.

O absent ones, whose image dwells within my heart,

and distant ones, whose memory whispers to me.

What have I to do with lightning, whose gleam saddens me,

or with the east wind, which does not heal me with your fragrance?

If only the winds that blow under command

would tell you what I suffer, and bring me tidings.

Longing that abides, patience that departs, and passion

that scatters me, and a beloved who will not respond to me.

Who will restore to me a time of union I once thought

would never end, and youth that once came my way?

Nothing remains of its beauty but its memory,

or wishes that bring it near and keep me far away.

Those nights I counted as part of my life,

    the days when youth's garden had tender, fragrant blooms;

the days when I was served cups of joy, despite

the slanderers, with a share undiminished.

A slender-waisted one, thick-lashed of eye, brings them,

swaying as a supple branch sways.

    يُجنيكَ مِن خَدِّهِ وَرداً بِنَسرينِ

    His saliva is honey-sweet; his canine teeth are cool and lustrous;

he lets you pluck roses mingled with white wild roses from his cheek.

Who will convey to my companions the words of one rejoicing

in what he finds, content of heart and eye:

that I found refuge in a sanctuary of lofty honor,

which greets me with glad tidings before my camel kneels?

People come to it in throngs, as though they

came for ritual worship on tawny-bearded camels.

You see kings standing at its threshold,

and behold a wayfarer and a poor man's son.

One seeks pardon from the penalty of his offense,

and another hopes for bounty free of reproach.

From it I came to one whose favors abound:

Abd al-Aziz, the mainstay of those who seek gifts.

His resolve reaches for glory, even were it said to lie

at a star's crown or in the whale's roaming grounds.

    هُما ذَخيرَتُهُ مِن كُلِّ مَخزونِ

    And he thinks of nothing but generosity and battle;

these two are his treasure among all hoarded things.

    O king, exalted in aspiration,

and son of illustrious kings, sovereign rulers,

who bestow high honors on those loyal to them,

and stain their tall spears with the blood of enemies.

A people whose deeds, when recounted, inspire pride

in Rabi'a, from Fez to China.

And when the traces of virtue vanished or were effaced,

and the pious were subjected to degradation and humiliation,

God chose you for the task by which you surpassed

the leaders in worldly life and religion.

Thus you became their mainstay in this world,

and in faith you were the just measure of the scales.

Through your good fortune they received a share never imagined

by any mind, nor ever thought possible in this world.

The Mighty One, through whom you are mighty, said:

"Rise and seek My aid, for I shall uphold My faith."

You answered your fortune when it called you, resolved,

with keen-edged blades and sleek steeds like wolves.

When they journey by night, you would think its stars

were lit in the mud by the sparks they strike from pebbles.

And every bright-faced warrior who meets death armored

in a coat of patience, not in any woven mail.

How many a band you ravaged with the sword's edge,

whose calf had lowed among them, beguilingly!

Until, when hopes had impregnated their dry she-camels,

you made them calve abortively, before full formation.

You wrote their appointed ends with the sword, when they were decreed

at your hands, by the kaf and nun of the command 'Be.'

Thus they became stories recited, and a lesson

for those to come and those living now.

So remain safe, content of eye, rejoicing

in family and fortunes, in honor and secure power.

And strengthen the bonds of faith and this world with a chosen one

from the stock of radiant, blessed lords,

a scion of the imams and the Dhu-titled rulers of Yemen,

lords of domed tents, lavish feeders and mighty spear-thrusters.

Your son, overflowing with bounty, blessed in his omen:

Saud, good fortune for the pious, ill fortune for adversaries.

His virtues have followed your exalted character,

as the second-place steed follows the winner on the racecourses.

Ask the armored warriors and the dark-bay horses about him when

there is nothing but spears or the edge of a sharpened sword.

There you find the bitter defense of honor, where you see

piebald steeds donning the adornment of black ones.

Then God's blessings and peace be upon

the one singled out for praiseworthy character in Nun,

and his radiant family and all his companions,

as long as gray doves lament in the gardens' tangled growth.
