The sincerity of your resolves won you the glory of the ages,

and the edges of keen swords brought you to the heights.

    فَإِن لَم يُفِد شَيئاً فَضَربُ الجَماجِمِ

    And glory is nothing but sacred law, pardon, and generosity;

if these avail nothing, then the striking of skulls.

None attains the heights but a noble, valiant chief,

who, once resolved, heeds no reproacher's words.

That is the Muslims' imam, Ibn Faisal,

deadly poison to the enemy, mercy to the peaceful.

A king whom other kings avoid in awe,

and whom thick-necked, ferocious lions dread.

He rose to greatness through the sword, hospitality, and bounty,

subduing enemies and shunning forbidden things.

How vast the difference between one whose striving is great

in winning high honors, and one who strives for dirhams.

If glory's lord could climb to it in the heavens,

he would exult in glory above the heads of the Ostrich stars.

How often he subdued enemies, east and west,

and trampled their protected lands with sturdy thoroughbreds.

A scion of kings who renewed the religion after

its throne had fallen from its towering supports.

Their renown traveled over the earth as the sun travels,

through championing guidance with the Mashrafi sword and keen lances.

By God, how much they rebuilt of the world's ruins,

and how many earlier noble deeds they made immortal!

And I was a worthy successor to them after

they died and rested in the bellies of stone-covered graves.

Had they been able, they would have praised you; and aloud would speak

their crumbling remains, in gratitude to you.

And you, when a grievous ordeal drew sidelong glances

from lions on a day darkened by battle dust,

and the wolf wandered there, dancing and swaying,

while hungry old vultures praised it,

were ever astride calamities' backs; when they grew tangled,

you faced the greatest with a resolute man's will.

And sleek steeds like wolves, worn thin

by crossing the wilderness's hollows and mountain passes,

had young men upon them who, when battle raged,

drank together from death's pools, like thirsty birds coming to water.

He climbed at an easy pace and mounted glory's saddle,

which defeated kings who tried to climb with ladders.

Forgiving whenever pardon was sound judgment,

and an angry lion when an opponent acted rashly.

Have you not seen a people whom his forbearance beguiled,

so they harbored fancies like a dreamer's tangled dreams?

Foolishly they wished their plotting might harm you,

but between them and their goal lay the slitting of throats.

Wishes that delivered them to humiliation and destruction,

and cast them into the depths of blazing misery.

And when they would accept nothing but discord, you assailed them

with a vast host ranging through the mountain passes.

So they ended, some lying felled upon the ground,

and others fettered with dark iron shackles.

They lost this world along with religion, and bought

the disgrace of sins with the honored dignity of piety.

When they saw your stern resolve, they fled,

thinking the broad earth the hoop of a ring.

And by choice they sought refuge with worshippers of the cross,

but came away with nothing but evil endings.

Driven by force, in humiliation and abasement,

they bite their thumb-tips in rage.

They dearly wish that, before this day, they had

passed one another cups of speckled serpents' venom,

and never reached the day on which they beheld

the faces of death, their mouths grimacing.

When they professed allegiance to religion, you welcomed them

as one enthralled welcomes the finest arrival.

You supported them after poverty and destitution,

and reconciled them after long conflict.

    أولئِك إِخوانُ الصَفا وَالتَراحُمِ

    Some among them proved true to what they professed;

those are brothers in sincerity and mutual compassion.

They were true to God, by whom they pledged their covenant

to their imam, as a steadfast, pious man would do.

Others among them contradicted what they professed,

and sold guidance for grave, ruinous sins.

Why did these people not learn from what you did

to their fathers in the distant past?

And you, even before the time of their affiliation

to religion, assailed them with the mother of crushing blows.

What new thing had appeared since then, if only they would reason?

But they are bodies with the minds of beasts.

O imam of guidance, wounds heal with time,

but the grudges of secretive souls remain.

So do not trust the foe you have bereaved,

even if he shows the cheerfulness of a smiling man.

For in his breast is anguish at what you have done,

and in his heart a blaze like that of kindled fires.

How often they have made a pledge while breaking it,

and how often sworn by God with a sinner's oath!

May you ever be victorious over them and others,

peerless in praise among the world's Arabs and non-Arabs.

And send blessings and peace, O God of all worlds,

upon the Chosen One, the elect from the house of Hashim,

and his radiant, noble companions and his family,

guides of guides, the pure and most noble.
