البرّoverland طوراًat times وطوراًand at times تركبyou ride اللججاthe deep seas
What drives you to afternoon journeys and travel by night,
What will it cost you, O soul, the winds and the night darkness?
overland at times, and at times to ride the deep seas?
Be steadfast, climbing the hill, little by little.

How many a young man whose stride in seeking sustenance was short
How many a youth has ambition curtailed?
you have found victorious with the arrows of sustenance.
I found him pierced by the arrows of fate which paralyzed him.
إنَّindeed لأمورَfor affairs إذاwhen انسدتwere blocked مسالكهاtheir pathways
فالصبرُthen patience يفتحُopens منهاamong them كلَّall ماthat آرتججاwas shut fast
Indeed, when the paths of affairs are blocked,
When the paths to desires seem closed,
patience opens every one of their barred ways.
Patience can open anything that appeared tightened.
لاdo not تيأسنever despair وإنand even if طالتgrows long مطالبةٌa pursuit
إذاif آستعنتyou seek help بصبرٍthrough patience أنthat ترىyou see فرجاrelief
Never despair, though the pursuit be long,
Do not despair, even if the quest seems long,
of seeing relief, if you seek patience's aid.
If you seek aid through patience, you will see relief.
أخلقhow fitting بذيfor one possessing الصبرِpatience أنthat يحظىhe should obtain بحاجتهِhis desire
ومدمنِand one persistent in القرعِknocking للأبوابِat the doors أنthat يلجاhe should enter
How fitting that the patient man should attain his desire,
It is the nature of the patient to attain his needs,
and that one who keeps knocking at doors should gain entry.
And he who knocks persistently at doors will enter.
فآطلبso seek لرجلكfor your foot قبلbefore الخطوِstepping موضعهاits place
فمَنfor whoever علاclimbs upon زلقاًslippery ground عنthrough غرّةٍheedlessness زلجاslips
So find a place for your foot before you step;
So seek for your feet, before stepping, a proper place;
for whoever climbs slippery ground unawares will slip.
He who climbs recklessly falls from the smooth and slippery.
ولاand do not let يغرّنكَdeceive you صفوٌa clear draught أنتَyou شاربهُdrinking it
فربماfor perhaps كانَit was بالتكديرِwith cloudiness ممتزجاmingled
And let no clear draught you drink deceive you,
Do not let the sweetness of what you drink deceive you;
for it may be mingled with cloudiness.
It may be blended with some bitterness.
لاnot ينتَجُare brought forth الناسُpeople إلّاexcept منfrom لقاحِهِمُtheir seed
يبدوappears لقاحُthe seed of الفتىthe young man يوماًone day إذاwhen نتِجاhe is brought forth
People are brought forth only from their seed;
People achieve only through their efforts;
a young man's seed is revealed one day when he is brought forth.
The efforts of a youth show some day when he succeeds.
