The friendship of kings leads to exaltation,

and the fidelity of kings is impossible.

Why do I find you inconstant

    in affection toward men,

    always vexed with whomever

you have befriended, your affection at a low ebb?

    A new disposition every

day, like the dispositions of mules.

    If he has refinement and

wit, you say, "That man is a brother of error."

Or if he has piety and

faith, you say, "That man is one of the bores."

Or if he stands midway between the

two, you say, "He is after my money."

So with conduct like this—may your mother

be bereaved of you—do you seek the ranks of eminence?
