إِذاif قُلتَyou say فيconcerning شَيءٍsomething نَعَمyes فَأَتِمَّهُthen fulfill it
إِذا قُلتَ في شَيءٍ نَعَم فَأَتِمَّهُ
فَإِنَّfor indeed نَعَمٌa 'yes' دَينٌa debt عَلىupon الحُرِّthe noble man واجِبُbinding
فَإِنَّ نَعَمٌ دَينٌ عَلى الحُرِّ واجِبُ
If you say 'yes' to something, then fulfill it.
If you say "yes" to something, then fulfill it,
For 'yes' is a debt binding upon a noble man.
For "yes" is a debt upon the free which must be paid.
وَإِلّاand if not فَقُلthen say لاno تَستَرِحyou will find ease وَتُرِحand give others ease بِهاby it
وَإِلّا فَقُل لا تَستَرِح وَتُرِح بِها
لِئَلّاlest يَقولَsay الناسُthe people إِنَّكَthat you are كاذِبُa liar
لِئَلّا يَقولَ الناسُ إِنَّكَ كاذِبُ
Otherwise, say 'no': you will find ease and give others ease by it,
Otherwise, say "no" and find peace in it,
Lest people say that you are a liar.
Lest people say you are a liar.
