If you do not fear my censure because of what

You know of my forbearance toward the ignorant,

Then fear my silence when I listen

To the speaker's foul words about you.

For the hearer of evil is a partner in it,

And the giver of food is like the eater.

An evil saying reaches those it concerns

Faster than a stream flowing downhill.

And whoever invites people to censure him,

They censure him with truth and with falsehood.

So do not stir up, if you have good sense,

War with the unsuspecting man of experience.

For if you provoke a man of reason,

You rouse in him a man of ruinous madness.

You will see in his swift assaults

Upon you the consequences of harm yet to come.
