صَحِبتُكَI kept you company إِذwhen أَنتَyou لاnot تُصحَبُwere kept company
صَحِبتُكَ إِذ أَنتَ لا تُصحَبُ
وَإِذand when أَنتَyou لاno غَيرُكَanyone other than you المَوكِبُthe retinue
وَإِذ أَنتَ لا غَيرُكَ المَوكِبُ
I kept you company when no one kept you company,
I befriended you though you have no friends,
And when you alone were the whole retinue,
And though none but you leads the procession.
وَإِذand when أَنتَyou تَفرَحُyou rejoiced بِالزائِرينَin visitors
وَإِذ أَنتَ تَفرَحُ بِالزائِرينَ
وَنفسُكَand your own self نَفسُكَyour own self تَستَحجِبُappoints as doorkeeper
وَنفسُكَ نَفسُكَ تَستَحجِبُ
And when you rejoiced in visitors,
You rejoice in visitors,
And you made yourself your own doorkeeper,
Yet your own self shies away.
وَإِذand when أَنتَyou تُكثِرُyou did much of ذَمَّreviling الزَمانِthe times
وَإِذ أَنتَ تُكثِرُ ذَمَّ الزَمانِ
وَمَشيُكَand your walking أَضعافُmany times as much ماthe amount that تَركَبُyou rode
وَمَشيُكَ أَضعافُ ما تَركَبُ
And when you often reviled the times,
You constantly blame the times,
And you walked many times more than you rode.
Yet your pace is slower than your mount's.
فَقُلتُso I said كَريمٌa generous man لَهُhe has هِمَّةٌambition
فَقُلتُ كَريمٌ لَهُ هِمَّةٌ
يَنالُhe will succeed فَأُدرِكُand then I shall attain ماwhat أَطلُبُI seek
يَنالُ فَأُدرِكُ ما أَطلُبُ
So I said, 'A generous man with ambition—
I said, "A noble soul with high ambitions
He will succeed, and then I shall attain what I seek.'
Can achieve what he seeks."
فَنِلتَthen you succeeded فَأَقصَيتَنيand then you cast me aside عامِداًdeliberately
فَنِلتَ فَأَقصَيتَني عامِداً
كَأَنّيas though I were ذوone with عُرَّةٍscabies أَجرَبُmangy
كَأَنّي ذو عُرَّةٍ أَجرَبُ
Then you succeeded and deliberately cast me aside,
But you intenionally rebuffed me
As though I were a mangy man afflicted with scabies.
As if I were a leprous outcast.
وَأَصبَحتُand I have become عَنكَfrom you إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle أَتَيcame (split verb stem)
وَأَصبَحتُ عَنكَ إِذا ما أَتَي
تُI (past-tense verb suffix) دونَunlike الوَرىhumankind كُلِّهِمall of them أُحجَبُI am barred
تُ دونَ الوَرى كُلِّهِم أُحجَبُ
And now, whenever I come,
So now when you come,
I alone, of all mankind, am barred from you.
I veil myself from all mankind.
