    O Ali—rather, O Abu al-Hasan, who holds

    the charming beauty in bondage:

    لا تكن وصمةً على الشعراءِ

    Fear God: you are the poet of Qays;

do not be a stain upon the poets.

Indeed, your companions who were present yesterday

came for fornication, not for singing.

You are blind, and fornicators commit misdeeds

that are vile and hidden even from the sighted.

Grant that you hear the conversation—what

do you know of the winking and gesturing in it,

and the signals with eyes and with

hands, and arranging a time to meet?

By my life, they have embarked upon a course

of treachery, and committed the foulest outrage,

without any regard for the sanctity of

affection, nor remembering the covenant of brotherhood.

They settled their business, while you are an ass,

    laden with dullness and stupidity.
