O captive of deceptive hope,

in the fetter of humiliation!

إِنَّ عزَّ اليأسِ خيرٌ

لكَ من ذلِّ الأماني

لكَ من ذلِّ الأماني

Indeed, the dignity of despair is better

for you than the abasement of wishes.

سامحِ الدهرَ إذا ع

سامحِ الدهرَ إذا ع

م زَّ وخذ صفوَ الزمانِ

م زَّ وخذ صفوَ الزمانِ

Yield to time when it grows harsh,

and take the best of time.

ربما اعدم ذو الحر

ربما اعدم ذو الحر

صِ واثرى ذو الثواني

صِ واثرى ذو الثواني

Sometimes the greedy man becomes destitute,

and the indolent grows rich.
