وَباهِلِيٍّand a Bahili مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of وائِلٍWa'il
And a Bahili of the Banu Wa'il,
who had gained wealth after destitution,
قَطَّبَhe scowled فيin وَجهيmy face خَوفَfor fear of القِرىhospitality
تَقطيبَthe scowling of ضِرغامٍa lion لَدىduring الباسِbattle
scowled in my face for fear of having to offer hospitality,
with the scowl of a lion in battle.
وَأَظهَرَand he displayed التيهَarrogance فَتايَهتُهُso I vied with him in arrogance
تيهَthe haughtiness of اِمرِئٍa man لَمdid not يَشقَsuffer بِالناسِbecause of people
And he showed his arrogance, so I matched him in it,
with the haughtiness of a man untroubled by others.
أَعَرتُهُI lent him إِعراضَthe indifference of مُستَكبِرٍa haughty man
فيin مَوكِبٍa procession مَرَّpassed بِكَنّاسِby a street sweeper
I lent him the indifference of a haughty man
who, in a procession, passed a street sweeper.
