فَياSo, O شامِخاًhaughty one أَقصِرdraw in عِنانَكَyour rein مُقصِراًholding back
فَإِنَّfor indeed مَطاياmounts الدَهرِof time تَكبوstumble وَتَعثَرُand trip
So, haughty one, draw in your rein and hold back,
for the mounts of time stumble and trip.
سَتَقرَعُyou will gnash سِنّاًa tooth أَوor تَعُضُّbite نَدامَةًin remorse
يَدَيكَboth your hands إِذاwhen خانَbetrays الزَمانُtime وَتُبصِرُand you will see
You will gnash your teeth or, in remorse, bite
your hands when time betrays you—and you will see.
وَيَلقاكَand will meet you رُشدٌsound judgment بَعدَafter غَيِّكَyour folly واعِظٌan admonisher
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it يَلقاكَmeets you وَالأَمرُwhile matters مُدبِرُare in decline
And sound judgment will meet you after your folly, an admonisher,
but it will meet you when matters are in decline.
