The repository of your secrets is suspect,

and your clothes are stuffed with faults.

You deny the guest your surplus provisions,

though your dwelling stands in broad, fertile land.

    O hoarder, withholder, miser,

who has no share in lofty honor!

O father of bribes, can one like me be won over?

No indeed, by Him who holds the unseen!

I will not wear a robe from one who praises me,

whose face bears scars from my hands,

and between whose sides are wounds of my making,

bleeding, with no physician to heal them.

I was never in a position to receive gifts

from you, nor is our kinship close.

How could I, when the branding irons have hissed,

leaving a brand whose nature is astounding,

and my verse has spread abroad reviling you,

and I have been called skillful and right on the mark?

Your wealth, to me, is an orphan's wealth,

and I do not deem it lawful to consume it.

Let this concise, eloquent word suffice you,

reaching as far as an orator reaches.
