وَهَبتُI spared القَومَthe people لِلحَسَنِfor al-Hasan بنِson of سَهلٍSahl
فَعَوَّضَنيso he recompensed me الجَزيلَan abundance مِنَof الثَوابِreward
I spared those people for al-Hasan ibn Sahl,
and he recompensed me with lavish reward.
وَقالَand he said دَعِleave off الهِجاءَsatire وَقُلand say جَميلاًsomething kind
فَإِنَّfor indeed القَصدَmoderation أَقرَبُnearer لِلثَوابِto reward
And he said, “Leave off satire, and speak kindly,
for moderation is nearer to reward.”
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him بَرِئتُI declare myself free إِلَيكَto you مِنهُمof them
فَلَيتَهُمso, would that they were بِمُنقَطِعِat the farthest end of التَرابِthe earth
So I said to him, “I disown them before you;
if only they were at the earth’s farthest end!
وَلَولاand were it not for نِعمَةُthe favor of الحَسَنِal-Hasan بنِson of سَهلٍSahl

And were it not for al-Hasan ibn Sahl’s favor
upon me, I would have inflicted grievous torment on them,

with verse at which the poets marvel,
resembling satire and reproach.

I would scheme against them as against enemies,
and deceive them with the cunning of wolves.
بَلَوتُI tested خِيارَهُمtheir best فَبَلَوتُand I found by testing قَوماًa people

I tested their best, and found a people
whose mature men are baser than the young.

And they were not transformed into dogs, yet I
saw those people as the likenesses of dogs.”
