بِعُمرِat the monastery of كَسكَرَKaskar طابَwas delightful اللَهوُrevelry وَالطَرَبُand rapture
وَاليادَكاراتُand the yādkār cups وَالأَدوارُand the drinking rounds وَالنُجُبُand the nujub goblets
At Kaskar's monastery, revelry and rapture were sweet,
With the passing of youth, revelry and joy declined,
as were the yādkār cups, the drinking rounds, and the nujub goblets.
As did memories, cycles, nobles, and the elite.
وَفِتيَةٌand young men بَذَلواthey devoted لِلكَأسِto the cup أَنفُسَهُمthemselves
وَأَوجَبواand accorded as due لِرَضيعِto the nursling of الكَأسِthe cup ماwhat يَجِبُis due
And youths devoted their very selves to the cup,
Young men who surrendered themselves to the chalice,
and accorded the cup's nursling what was his due.
And fulfilled what the infant of the goblet was owed.
وَأَنفَقواand they spent فيin سَبيلِthe pursuit of القَصفِrevelry ماwhat وَجَدواthey found
وَأَنهَبواand gave away lavishly ماwhat لَهُمbelonged to them فيهاon it وَماand what اِكتَسَبواthey earned
And they spent in pursuit of revelry all they found,
They spent in the way of carousing all they had,
and lavished on it all they owned and all they earned.
Plundering what belonged to them and what they earned.
مُحافِظينَsteadfast defenders إِنif اِستَنجَدتَهُمyou sought their aid دَفَعواthey defended
وَأَسخِياءَand generous إِنِif اِستَوهَبتَهُمyou asked them for gifts وَهَبواthey gave
Steadfast defenders—if you sought their aid, they protected you,
Guardians - if you sought their aid they would defend,
and generous—if you asked them for gifts, they gave.
And generous - if you asked a gift, they granted.
I drank in fellowship with مِنهُمamong them كِراماًgenerous men سادَةًlords نُجُباًnoble men
مُهَذَّبينَrefined نَمَتهُمُbrought them forth سادَةٌlords نُجُبُnoble
I drank with generous lords among them, men of noble stock,
I reminisced over their nobility and grace,
refined men, sprung from noble lords.
Well-mannered, from a line of dignified elite.
فَلَمso not نَزَلwe cease فيin رِياضِthe gardens of العُمرِthe monastery نَعمُرُهاwe fill them
قَصفاًwith revelry وَتَغمُرُناand flood us اللَذاتُpleasures وَالطَرَبُand rapture
So we kept filling the monastery's gardens
We did not cease to revel in the gardens of life,
with revelry, while pleasures and rapture flooded us.
With wine flowing as we were indulged in joy.
وَالزَهرُand the blossoms يَضحَكُlaughs وَالأَنواءُand the rains باكِيَةٌweeping
وَالنايُand the reed flute يُسعِدُlends accompaniment وَالأَوتارُand the strings تَصطَخِبُclamor
And the blossoms laughed, while the rains wept,
The flowers smiled and the breeze wept,
and the reed flute joined in, while the strings clamored.
The flute made glad while strings were plucked.
وَالكَأسُand the cup فيin فَلَكِthe orbit of اللَذاتِpleasures دائِرَةٌrevolving
تَجريit passes round وَنَحنُand we لَهاfor it فيin دورِهاits circuit قُطُبُthe axis
And the cup revolved in the orbit of pleasures,
The goblet circled in orbits of delight,
passing round, with us the axis of its circuit.
Spinning as we revolved around its rim.
وَالدَهرُand Time قَدalready طُرِفَتwere struck blind عَنّاfrom us نَواظِرُهُits eyes
فَماso not تُرَوِّعُناterrify us الأَحداثُmisfortunes وَالنُوَبُand calamities
And Time's eyes had been struck blind to us,
Fate had turned its gaze from us,
so misfortunes and calamities did not terrify us.
No longer shaken by events and misfortunes.
