And many a night-traveler did not journey over the earth seeking
A carrier that did not carry on earth, seeking
a resting place, nor did any traveler carry it across the deserts.
A place, nor did a separator separate it
سَرَتit traveled by night حَيثُwhere لَمdid not تَجِدِfind الرِكابَthe riding camels وَلمand was not تُنَخmade to kneel

It traveled where it found no riding camels, and was not made to kneel
It went where it did not find riders, and was not
for water, nor did any restrainer shorten its tether.
Prevented from reaching the watering place by any barrier
تَمُرُّit passes وَراءَbeyond اللَيلِthe night وَاللَيلُwhile the night ضارِبٌlying heavy

It passes beyond the night, while night lies heavy
It passes behind the night while the night
with its bulk; within it are a night-talker and a sleeper.
Strikes with its body, therein a murmur and slumber
إِذاwhen وَرَدَتit arrives لَمdoes not يَردُدِsend back اللَهُGod وِفدَهاits delegation

When it arrives, God does not send its delegation back
When it arrives, God does not turn away its delegation
to its people; and God sees and hears.
From its people, and God is seeing and hearing
تَفَتَّحُopen أَبوابُthe gates السَمَواتِthe heavens دونَهاbefore it
إِذاwhen قَرَعَknocks at الأَبوابَthe gates مِنهُنَّfrom among them قارِعُa knocker
The gates of the heavens open before it
The gates of the heavens open for it
when a knocker from among them knocks at the gates.
When it knocks on those gates, a knocker
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرجوI surely hope اللَهَGod حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّنيas though I
أَرىI see بِجَميلِthrough good الظَنِّexpectation ماwhat اللَهُGod صانِعُwill do
And I surely hope in God, until it is as though I
And indeed I hope in God as if I
see, through my good opinion of Him, what God will do.
See with the beauty of thinking what God will do
