Is it for this world that I keep you in reserve, my cousin,

so I may know—or do I keep you for the Reckoning?

How long must I see you give nothing until

I shake you? I am done with reproach.

And you never cease gathering and storing away,

as though you were at the farthest edge of the earth.

So your harm is not far from your friend,

and your goodness lies at the farthest edge of the earth.

    فَحَظّي مِن إِخائِكَ لِلكِلابِ

    I came to you as a visitor, only to come upon a dog;

so my share of your brotherhood is for the dogs.

What a wretched kinsman you are, as far as we know,

and the vilest companion to a brother far from home.

Does your guest depart from you displeased,

while your dwelling is spacious, its grounds fertile?

For you have indeed become far removed from generosity,

and are at the very heart of what opposes noble deeds.

And I have no need of your bounty, but

I turn you from your ugly conduct toward what is right.
